Classroom:

At what age can my child start driver's education classes?

They can start the classroom at the age of 15 years. Some driving schools in the area will allow the student to start at 14 1/2. This is not always the best thing for your child. If they start at 14 1/2 years, they will have to wait almost a year before getting the temps and starting the in-car lessons. That is too much time between finishing the classroom and starting the in-car lessons. The child will not retain the very important information they receive during the classroom time. I recommend that student start as close to the 15 1/2 mark as possible.

Why do other driving schools let the child start classroom at 14 1/2 years of age?

Other driving schools allow the child to start the classroom at the age of 14 1/2 simply to make more money. They are not thinking about your child's driver's education, they are thinking about getting as many students as they can. The more students they have, the more money they make. The student is not going to retain the information they need to be a safe, responsible, defensive driver if they take the classroom at that early of an age.

How many hours of classroom training must the student have?

WI State law requires that every student under the age of 18 years MUST have 30 hours of classroom training in order to get a drivers license in WI. All missed classroom time must be made up so that the student has accumulated at least 30 hours of classroom training. If a break is given during the classroom day, such as between the first and second hours of classroom, then the classroom time must be extended so that the student is learning for 30 hours.

How do I sign up or register my child for driver's education classes?

Either go to the registration page of this web site or call my office to register. (click this line to go to the registration page)

What happens if my child has to miss a day or two of the classroom?

All missed classroom time must be made up by attending the session that they missed in a upcoming classroom. For example, if your child missed session #05 of the classroom that they are registered in, then they would attend session #05 in a classroom held after the class they are in finishes. They must have all their classroom time finished before they may go for their road test. Again, the student must have 30 hours of classroom time to qualify for the drivers license.

If my child/student took classroom at a different school, can they take the in-car lessons with Advanced?

Yes they can. They will need to finish the classroom training at that school and then contact me to take the in-car lessons with me.

Are all driving schools the same?

NO. Each driving school is different. The main difference is the experience of the instructors. Each school also develops their own classroom lesson plans. There are a few things that every driving school in WI must teach, but most of the classroom is developed by the school. The best way to tell if the driving school is a great or good school is by looking at what training the school owners and instructors go through. Do the instructors and owners have continuing education and how much? Another thing to look at is if the driving school belongs to a professional traffic safety organization such as WPDSA, WDTSEA, or the DSAA. If they don't, ask them why.

In-Car Lessons:

When can my child start driving with me?

As soon as the child receives their instruction permit (temps) they can start driving with you.

When does my child start driving with an instructor?

When the child gets their instruction permit (temps) they must take their first road lesson within 60 days of getting the temps.

How do I schedule a road lesson for my child/student?

Call me at 920-494-0996 or email me at advdrivertraining@new.rr.com to schedule road lessons.

What if my child can not take a scheduled road lesson with you?

Call and cancel or reschedule the road lesson. If the student does not cancel the lesson and does not take the lesson, a no show charge will be added to your account and all other lessons may be cancelled. If you get the voice mail, please leave a message about the time and date of the lesson that needs to be canceled.

How often should my child take a road lesson?

The student must hold the temps of a minimum of six months so I like to space the 6 hours of in-car training and observation time over that 6 month holding time. I recommend that the student take a road lesson once a month of that temps holding time. I have found that if the student takes one lesson a month for the six months holding the temps, they do much better on the road test.

What if my child can not find their temps and have a road lesson that same day?

They either need to find the temps or cancel the lesson. The student MUST have their temps with them when taking an in-car lesson.

Where is my child/student picked up at for a scheduled road lesson?

If the student lives within the communities of Green Bay, Allouez, Ashwaubeonon, Bellevue, De Pere, or Howard, they can be picked up at home or school. A pickup point will be determined when the student schedules their road lesson for all other areas.

Where do you pickup students at Bay Port High School?

The pickup point at Bay Port is the visitor parking area by the Auditorium. Look for the Advanced Driver Training vehicle.

Where do you pickup students at West Green Bay High School?

The pickup point at Green Bay West High School is the parent/visitor parking area by the main doors on the west side of the building by the fence.

Where do you pickup students at Southwest Green Bay High School?

The pickup point at Southwest Green Bay High School is in the visitor parking area in the main parking lot towards the roadway.

If my child/student took classroom at a different school, can they take the in-car lessons with Advanced?

Yes they can. They will need to finish the classroom training at that school and then contact me to take the in-car lessons with me. There is paperwork involved so you need to allow 2-3 weeks of processing time before the student can get the temps.

What type of footwear should the student wear for the in-car lessons?

The student should wear a closed heel shoe. NO FLIP FLOPS the student does not have good and smooth control of the gas and brake pedal when wearing flip flops. The student needs to be able to keep their heel on the floor and pivot the foot from the gas to the brake and back again without picking up the foot.

Instruction Permit (temps):

When can my child/student get their temps?

The student is eligible to get the temps after the 4th day of classroom and if they are at least 15 1/2 years old or older.

Why must the student wait until after the 4th day of classroom is done before they can get their temps?

The first four days of classroom is used to cover the information that the student will be tested on. We cover the traffic laws and procedures and also traffic signs, signals, and roadway markings those first four days. It does not make sense to have the student take a test on information they have not yet learned. Those first four days of classroom prepares the student for the temps test they must take in order to get the temps.

How long is the temps good for?

The temps are valid for 12 months. If the student has not completed their driver's education requirements and the permit expired, then they must apply to renew the temps for another 12 months.

Does my child need to have their temps with them when they are the driver?

Yes, they must have their temps with them whenever they are the driver of a motor vehicle. Driving a vehicle in WI without having a valid license or temps on you is a violation of WI law and could result in a citation being issued to the driver. ALWAYS HAVE YOUR TEMPS OR LICENSE WITH YOU WHEN YOU ARE THE DRIVER.

What happens if my student loses their temps?

They will need to get a new temps. If they are still taking driver's education, they will need to get a new MV3001 form from me. If they are done with driver's education, they will need to take their completion form MV3192 to the DMV and apply for a duplicate instruction permit.

Can my child/student receive a traffic ticket for doing something wrong when they have their temps?

Yes. Violating any traffic laws while holding the temps can get the student a traffic ticket. If that happens, the student must wait another 6 months before they can take the state road test.

Road Test:

When can I schedule a Road Test for my child?

You can schedule a Road Test up to 11 weeks before the student is eligable. It is recommended that you wait untill all the student's in-car lessons are for sure scheduled and that they will be taken.

What do I need to take with me for the road test?

If the student is under the age of 18, they must take: 1) Driver's Education Course Completion Form, 2) Temps, 3) Parent, 4) Birth Certificate, 5) Social Security Card.

What happens if I fail the Road Test?

If you fail the road test, you will have to wait either 1 day, 7 days, or 14 days depending on what you failed for. You must then schedule another road test.

What will they have me do on the road test?

They will score you on:

1. Making Left and Right Turns

2. Approaching and driving through Intersections

3. Driving in Business and Residential areas

4. Lane Changing to the Right and Left

5. Y Turn

6. Road Side Stop or Start (Hill Parking)

7. Parking Lot Driving

8. Parking - Parallel/Angle/Straight - the examiner will choose which one to score on

9. Backing the vehicle

Check you student's workbook and motorist handbook for more information.

Payment:

What types of payment do you take?

At this time, I take cash, check, or money order. The student will receive a receipt for all payments made.

Why do you not take credit cards?

To keep the costs down, I do not take credit cards at this time. If I were to take credit cards, I would have to charge at least $25.00 more per student.

When does full payment need to be made by?

The student's account needs to be paid if full on or before the 5th in-car lesson.

Do I need to send in a payment before the classroom?

No, the first payment can be made on the 1st day of classroom. If you wish to send in any payments before the start of classroom, the payment will be held until that first day of classroom.

Can I send a payment with the student during the in-car lessons?

Yes, you can send payments with the student during the in-car training. The student will receive a receipt for all payments made.

What happens if the student's account is not paid in full on or before the 5th in-car lesson?

The student's 6th lesson may be cancelled and they may not be allowed to reschedule until the account is paid in full.

What if I need more time to get the account paid off?

Please call the office and discuss the issue with me. I am sure we can work something out.
